PETRONAS is proud that its Fluid Technology SolutionsTM have once again provided an on- track competitive edge for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team as it secured the 2014 FIA Formula One World Constructors' Championship* in Round 16 of the 2014 Formula One season in Sochi, Russia.
The momentous occasion also signaled a successful collaboration between PETRONAS and the Silver Arrows in the new 1.6 litre, V6 turbocharged era. The year 2014 has introduced what is widely recognised as the biggest technical revolution since the first Formula One season with energy efficiency as a key performance factor.
Together, PETRONAS and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team have spent more than three years working closely to co-engineer a brand new range of customised fuels and lubricants that help provide a competitive edge on track in 2014 and beyond, pushing the team to the podium at every race this year.
“We’re extremely delighted with the success that we have achieved together with the team and congratulate everyone involved for their hard work. This is truly a historical milestone for PETRONAS as technical partner and producer of the winning formula for the champion team this season,” said PETRONAS President and Group CEO, Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas.
Meeting these challenges has been achieved through PETRONAS Fluid Technology SolutionsTM – an intelligent approach to fluid requirements that maximises performance through tailor-made product offerings and expert services. The characteristics of the PETRONAS PRIMAX fuel and the way it performs during combustion are key to an efficient, powerful and reliable engine operation, while PETRONAS SYNTIUM lubricants play a crucial role in ensuring reliable performance of the Power Unit.
These lubricants are specially designed alongside the Mercedes-Benz F1W05 Hybrid car by a team of experts working closely with engineers at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team in Brackley and as a result, PETRONAS Primax and PETRONAS Syntium have done outstandingly in providing efficiency and performance to the team under the regulations set by the FIA this year requiring cars to run on 30% less fuel.
“PETRONAS has played an integral role in the success of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS this year on track,” commented Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. “The technical challenge of the 2014 regulations centred around delivering the most efficient performance possible. Thanks to the commitment and expertise of our partners at PETRONAS, we developed the most competitive Hybrid Power Unit and Hybrid race car in Formula 1 this year, producing more power and achieving greater efficiency than our competitors. In simple terms, we could not have achieved this without our partners – and it is a proud moment for all of us to secure the first FIA Formula 1 World Constructors Championship for Mercedes-Benz and for PETRONAS.”
The same technical expertise that delivers the lubricants used to power Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's cars is also put into practice in delivering the lubricants that power everyday road-going cars. Leveraging Formula One as its ultimate test bench, PETRONAS’ scientific team use the same approach in developing customized fluid solutions in extreme and demanding situations to engineer technologically superior lubricants and oils for road going cars. Ultimately, the same concerns apply – maximising engine power, efficiency and durability whilst reducing fuel consumption.
